Abstract
Introduction: The most common congenital injury that affects the jaw and face is Cleft palate and lip. In people who have cleft palate, lip or both, abnormalities in size, shape and time of formation and eruption of teeth are more common than other people. Early detection of the number of missing teeth and paying attention to the size, shape and count of the remaining teeth are important factors in providing the correct treatment plan.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive epidemiologic study, 135 Iranian patients aged 7-34 years who referred to dental school and cleft lip and palate clinic of Abouzar Hospital in Ahvaz were evaluated in 1400-1401.The records were, archive of panoramic x-rays and patient’s medical files. In this study, anomalies of Hyperdontia, Hypodontia and Abnormalities in number of teeth were investigated. Data were analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk ، Chi-squar, independent-t ،Mann Whitney, Kruskal wallis tests, using SPSS software version 22. The significance level for all tests was P<0.05.
Results: Dental Abnormalities are very common among patients with cleft lip and palate especially in bilateral type of it, After Hypodontia, there were Abnormal eruption of teeth and Hyperdontia respectively. Among Hypodontia patients, the most cases were reported in patients with Bilateral cleft lip and palate and lowest in cleft lip. There was a significant difference between the two groups of cleft lip & palate and cleft lip. (p<0.005) (Pvalue = 0.011)
Conclusion: The severity of dental Abnormalities is very common among patients with Cleft lip and palate, Especially in Bilateral type, and Missing teeth was the most common Dental abnormality.
