A Survey of the Level of Awareness of General Dentists in Isfahan City About Methods of Infection Control in Respiratory Diseases

Abstract

Introduction: Dental staff are exposed to pathogenic microorganisms more than any other profession. Therefore, during disease pandemics, especially Covid-19, enhanced awareness of infection control, knowledge of preventive methods, and increased vigilance are essential. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge of general dentists in Isfahan about infection control methods for respiratory patients.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in Isfahan city with 120 statistical samples of working general dentists in the year 2021. After preparing a specialized questionnaire and checking the validity and reliability of standardized questionnaire, it was distributed to the target population. The results were presented in descriptive statistics.
Results: MThe mean total awareness score among general dentists in Isfahan city was7.35 ± 3.12 of a maximum score of 14. The mean score for knowledge of infection control methods was 3.87 ± 2.06 and for knowledge of clinical symptoms it was 3.47 ± 1.59 of a maximum score of 7. The average Performance 2.07 ± 1.25 of the maximum score of 4. No significant association was found between awareness/performance and gender. A significant association was observed between awareness (P = 0.031) and performance (0.012) with work experience of 5 to 10 years and 10 to 15 years had higher level of knowledge and performance. No significant association was found between awareness/performance and university of graduation.
Conclusion: The average score of knowledge and performance of general dentists working in Isfahan regarding infection control methods for respiratory diseases is moderate..
