Introduction: Considering the increasing demand for dental implants in societies, the high cost of this treatment, and patients' unrealistic expectations regarding its success, this study aims to evaluate the patient-centered perspective and understanding of peri-implantitis in patients referred to the implant department of Isfahan Faculty of Dentistry.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted on patients referred to the implant department of Isfahan Dental School in 2022, who had completed their implant treatment for at least one year. A questionnaire was used to investigate gender, age, and treatment, including implant position (anterior or posterior, maxillary or mandibular), type of prosthesis (fixed or removable), and treatment type, in order to examine the patient-centered perspective and understanding of peri-implantitis. The Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used for data analysis (α = 0.05).
Results: Out of 58 patients (167 implants), 29.3% had peri-implantitis, while 70.7% of the individuals were without peri-implantitis. The level of knowledge of peri-implantitis disease was higher than the average (19.25 ± 7.98). The level of knowledge of the treatment of peri-implantitis was lower than the average (11.39 ± 6.55). A weak, positive, and significant correlation was observed between patients' overall satisfaction after implant treatment and both their knowledge of peri-implantitis and its treatment.
Conclusion: Patients' understanding of peri-implantitis and its prognosis is generally poor, and they hold unrealistic expectations regarding implant treatment. There is a need to improve the existing situation by establishing better dentist-patient communication, treatment descriptions, a patient-centered approach, and more frequent patient follow-up visits.
