Abstract

Introduction: Considering the increase in demand for dental implants in societies, the expensiveness of this treatment, and unrealistic expectations regarding its success in patients, this study aims to evaluate the patient- centered perspective and understanding of peri implantitis in patients referred to the implant department of Isfahan Faculty of Dentistry.
Materials&Methods: This descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted on patients (2022) referred to the implant department of Isfahan Dental School who had completed their implant treatment for at least one year. A questionnaire was used to investigate gender, age, and treatment including implant position (anterior or posterior, maxillary or mandibular), prosthesis type (fixed or removable), and treatment type in order to examine the patient-centered perspective and understanding of peri-implantitis. Mann Whitney and Spearman correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data (α=0.05).
Results: Out of 58 patients (167 implants), 29.3% had peri-implantitis, while 70.7% of the individuals were without peri-implantitis.The level of knowledge of peri-implantitis disease was higher than the average (19.25±7.98). The level of knowledge of the treatment of peri-implantitis was lower than the average (11.39±6.55). Patients' overall satisfaction after implant treatment had a weak, positive and significant correlation with the level of knowledge of peri-implantitis disease and knowledge of peri-implantitis treatment.
Conclusion: Patients' understanding of peri-implantitis and its prognosis is generally poor, and patients have unrealistic expectations of implant treatment. There is a need to improve the existing situation by establishing better communication between the dentists and the patient, treatment description, patient-centered communication and more patient visits are necessary.
