Evaluation Causes, Effects and Methods to Manage the Stress in Dental Students

Abstract

Introduction: The present study was conducted to investigate the causes, effects, and methods of coping with stress in the last 3 years students of dentistry at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.
Materials and Methods: The present research was a descriptive cross-sectional study.  The statistical population of the research was the last 3 years students of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. 240 students with convenience sampling were selected and they responded to questionnaires measuring anxiety and stress, effective factors, and strategies used by students to cope with stress. Data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA. The significance level in all tests was considered to be P ≤ 0.05.
Result: The average age of the students was 23.65 ± 0.77. Of the 240 participating students, 55.8% were single and 44.2% were married. Data show that 80% of students are stressed due to speaking at a scientific conference, after that family problems, Strictness of the teachers, Probability of infection and Course exams are among the important factors of inducing stress in dental students (P ≥ 0.05). 45% of students feel bored due to stress. 73% of students listen to music when stressed.
Conclusion: Various factors, especially university factors such as concerns about contracting infectious diseases and some of the educational rules, are more stressful for students. Appropriate interventions can reduce impact of these stressors and provide a suitable environment for learning and acquiring knowledge in dental schools.
