Introduction: Contamination is a frequent challenge during composite restorations in pediatric dentistry, often compromising the bond strength of restorative materials.This study aimed to evaluate the effect of blood and hemostatic agents contamination ( aluminum chloride 25% and ferric sulfate15.5% ) on the shear bond strength of composite restorations in primary canine teeth using self-etch and universal bonding systems.
Materials and Methods: This invitro study was conducted on 80 extracted primary canine teeth. The samples were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group A: contaminated with blood / Group B: contaminated with Aluminum chloride 25% / Group C: contaminated with Ferric sulfate 15.5% / Group D: No contamination(control group). Each group was subdivided into two subgroups based on bonding system used (self etch [SE bond] and universal [G premium]) and the composite was placed and cured.Bond strength was mesured using a universal testing machine and final breaking force was recorded in megapascals.Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis parametric test (α=0.05).in SPSS 26.
Results: The bond strength in teeth contaminated with blood and aluminum chloride 25% or ferric sulfate15.5% was significantly lower than the control group. Also,SE bond strength was consistently higher than that of G premium bond within all groups.
Conclusion: Contamination with blood and hemostatic agents (aluminum chloride 25% and ferric sulfate 15.5%) significantly reduces dentin bond strength in both self etch and universal bonding systems, with the most pronounced reduction observed. In the group contaminated with aluminum chloride 25% self etch bonding consistently showed higher bond strength under all contamination conditions but the difference was not significant.
