Abstract
Introduction: The height and width of anterior teeth play a crucial role in creating an attractive smile, and smile design is a complex process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of changes in the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the maxillary central incisor on smile esthetics.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in 2021 in Isfahan as a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study using a questionnaire to evaluate the opinions of 31 orthodontists, 31 restorative and esthetic specialists, 31 general dentists, and 31 laypersons. The first part of the questionnaire related to longitudinal changes of the central incisor, the second part related to changes in tooth width, and the final part related to changes in gingival height. After reviewing the participant’s opinions, the results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA test, mean, and standard deviation at a significance level of 5%.
Results: The highest mean score for the image of central incisor height corresponded to 10 mm (normal) (6.86±1.821). The highest mean score for the image of central incisor width was related to 8 mm (normal) (6.62±1.619). The highest mean score for the image of gingival height corresponded to the level of the canine gingival margine (normal) (6.90±1.673). A statistically significant difference was observed between participants’ opinions regarding the height, width, and gingival height of maxillary central incisor (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Most participants correctly identified the natural dimensions of the maxillary central incisor. Dentists demonstrated greater accuracy compared to laypersons, and a significant difference was observed between their opinions
