Title: The Role of Advanced Imaging Technologies (CBCT, Artificial Intelligence, and CAD/CAM) in Aesthetic Dental Decision-Making: A Narrative Review
Background:
Dental aesthetics extend beyond mere appearance and are closely linked to oral health–related quality of life and self-esteem. The limitations of conventional two-dimensional and subjective assessment methods highlight the growing necessity for adopting advanced digital technologies.
Methods:
This narrative review examined the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to 2025 using keywords related to CBCT, artificial intelligence, and CAD/CAM in the context of aesthetic dental decision-making. The analysis focused on findings from recent reviews and clinical studies exploring their diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
Findings:
Evidence indicates that CBCT provides accurate three-dimensional assessment of facial bone thickness, facilitates prosthesis-driven implant design, and minimizes spatial errors. Artificial intelligence algorithms enhance efficiency through automated segmentation, multimodal image registration, and smile simulation, thereby reducing design time and enabling personalized treatment planning. CAD/CAM technology, by shortening laboratory procedures, improving marginal fit precision, and optimizing color matching, has significantly improved the quality of aesthetic restorations. Nevertheless, high equipment costs, the need for specialized skills, and concerns regarding radiation exposure and ethical considerations remain major challenges to their widespread clinical use.
Conclusion:
Integration of CBCT, artificial intelligence, and CAD/CAM within a unified digital workflow can enhance accuracy, efficiency, and patient satisfaction in aesthetic dental treatments. Full realization of these benefits requires standardized protocols, digital competency training, and adherence to radiation safety and ethical principles.
