Introduction:Endodontic treatments may be associated with unintended procedural accidents/incidents during therapy. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the errors in canal preparation and obturation of root canals in mandibular and maxillary molars.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on CBCT images of 104 maxillary molars and 95 mandibular molars retrieved from the archive of a private oral and maxillofacial radiology clinic in Isfahan, Iran. The quality of root canal treatment was assessed and classified using a checklist. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test at a significance level of 0.05 using SPSS software version 27.
Results: Out of 257 and 255 root canals examined in maxillary and mandibular molars, respectively, no endodontic treatment errors were observed in 72.8% of maxillary canals and 77.2% of mandibular canals. In maxillary root canals, underfilling (short obturation) was observed in 10.5% and non-filled canals in 5.4%, being the most frequent errors. In mandibular root canals, underfilling was observed in 7.5% and non-filled canals in 6.3%, also being the most frequent errors. No statistically significant difference was found between the type of error and tooth number in the maxilla and mandible, nor between the two arches (P > 0.05).
Conclusion:The most common error was underfilling (short obturation) in both jaws, with the highest incidence observed in the palatal canal of maxillary molars and the mesiobuccal/mesiolingual canal of mandibular molars.
