Introduction: Currently, there is no formal educational program on oral and dental health during pregnancy in midwifery curricula in Iran. This study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate an oral health training course during pregnancy for undergraduate midwifery students at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2022-2023.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted in 2022-2023 in Isfahan on 75 undergraduate midwifery students. A validated questionnaire, previously in 2023, was distributed to assess awareness, attitude, and performance. After completing the pre-intervention questionnaire, an educational workshop was held. Changes in the mean scores of knowledge, attitude, and performance were assessed before, immediately after, and three months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using independent-samples t-test and repeated-measures ANOVA at a significance level of 5%.
Results: The results showed significant changes in the levels of knowledge, attitude, and performance among students before, immediately after, and three months after the intervention (P < 0.001). The most frequent concern, according to the students, was related to two factors: dental costs and pregnant mothers' lack of awareness about the necessity of dental visits. These two factors were perceived by students as preventing pregnant mothers from visiting dentists.
Conclusion: The educational workshop on oral health had a positive impact on improving the knowledge and performance of midwifery students.
